Progress – you’re making great progress on the move. Congratulations, and enjoy emptying each one of those boxes and reacquainting yourself with your special things. Happy days!

Judy, it has been ‘enlightening’ to open some of our boxes. The word ‘excess’ comes to mind all too often. Dishes with service for 12 in three different patterns can’t be accommodated here, so back to storage they go. Glasses, so many glasses…but still no box with kitchen utensils. We made good progress this week and will eventually get there. Pacing ourselves is key.

When we downsized and moved, I found I had to keep reducing things as I went along. I got rid of dishes and glasses before the move, and when I went to fill the cabinets, I donated more. Formal dinners became less and less for me. 🙂 Fingers crossed you find the ever needed kitchen utensils.

I’m so happy for you – having your own place again, using all that beautiful furniture and the appliances etc. Keep sharing your updates (I love having a window into other bloggers’ worlds).

Leanne, it felt good to unpack our things and start rebuilding our little nest. I will write more about that experience at the end of the month. Just wanted to use Wordless Wednesday to share our good news.

We envy your strength and determination. We wish you good luck in your long term plan. We are starting a five year plan to simplify and downsize. That’s harder for Linda as she has more stuff.

Hi John, we have been here less than one week, but it already feels cozy. It helps that the layout of the apartment is open and there is plenty of storage space. The second photo is of Malcolm’s baking equipment which takes up an entire closet. That’s probably only about half of what he owns. Linda has nothing on Malcolm when it comes to having stuff.

Good progress. It’s amazing how a space can be transformed into something special with a little effort.

Ally, the space feels good – small and cozy, but good.

Congratulations on making great progress. It all takes time and a lot of effort, but looks like you are doing very well indeed.
When we downsized we had to give so much stuff away, it helped that my niece was just starting her new home and needed some things, we gladly gave a lot of things to her.

Gilda, at some point we will either give it away to friends and relatives or donate it. It is simply too overwhelming to think about right now, so back to the storage unit it goes. We do have a garage here, so I have put a few things aside there, just in case.

Congratulations, Suzanne, on your progress! Your condo looks great with natural light coming in and a neutral palette for the furniture. Pace yourself as you unpack. I look forward to your updates after you settle in your new place.

Thank you Natalie. I love the neutral palette, but I think it needs some live plants. We are heeding your advice to pace ourselves, and are doing only what we feel comfortable with each day. We will get there.

Finally! We actually put down the initial deposit in mid-March with an expected occupancy date of April 3rd. With the hard part done, I now get to concentrate on the fun stuff….decorating!

Yay, progress! The last time I moved was almost 30 years ago so we’ve acquired a few things in the meantime, for sure. Although we have no plans to move anytime soon, I am slowly trying to weed through my stuff. The biggest illusion I struggle with is that “someday” something might come in handy… ummm… probably not. It looks like you did a great job!

Janis, yes and no. We still have stuff we don’t need but are not willing to part with, so back to the storage unit it will go. Malcolm thinks similarly to you…’it might come in handy.’ I had to devote an entire closet to his baking supplies, and that stuff in the photo is probably only half of what he owns.

I have a list of quotes that I’ve collected over the years. I’m not sure who said this one but, “Storage units are full of decisions that haven’t been made” is a favorite. 🙂

Suzanne,
So happy for you and, hopefully, the tough part is behind you. Fortunately, we’ve only had to make three moves in forty-plus years because the stress turns me into a “Grump-a-potamus” and that’s not a pretty sight. Looks like you and Malcolm are taking things in stride. Best wishes for a smooth move. Joe

Thanks Joe, we are definitely pacing ourselves. We decided today that it is okay to leave a few boxes untouched for a few days while we deal with other issues – like hooking up the internet and cable TV, changing our address, buying groceries, etc. The list goes on.

I’ve moved a lot, but not in a long time. I used to love opening the boxes and finding homes for my things. Now that I’ve lived here for 30 years I know I HAVE TOO MUCH STUFF!!!!! I need to move so that I’m forced to get rid of some stuff! Looks like a nice place you are settling into.

Hi Dawn, I highly recommend a good purge at least every five years, move or no move. If we weren’t anticipating building at some point, we would have had to get rid of a lot more. The apartment is very comfortable and the floorplan is great. It’ just needs more closet space.

Hi roost1350, welcome to Picture Retirement, and thanks for leaving a comment. We are Malcolm and Suzanne and if you’d like to know our ‘back-story’, please read the About Me page which will link you to our very first blog post. We’d like to get to know you too, starting with your name if you don’t mind. I’ll hop over and read a few posts on your blog later today. Our posts are irregular, but I typically do a Wordless Wednesday, and a monthly wrap-up, which generally means two or three posts per month. I do hope you will come again. Retirement is an exciting time of life, isn’t it?
