Until recently, I did not realized that I have a favorite color. When asked, I typically stutter out a very non-committed, “um green??” It was not something I have ever paid attention to, or seriously thought about. I tend to wear black or denim and the occasional jewel tone, my home is decorated in various shades of beige and the car I drive is white. Pretty boring stuff.
A few years ago, when I started taking my photography more seriously I realized that the majority of my photographs, especially my favorite ones, were dominated by a single color. As I scroll through my Instagram page, I notice a recurrence of that same color on average, about five to one. Clearly, I am drawn to one specific color.
Granted, two of these three were taken at the beach, which adds some clarity as to how blue emerged as my favorite color. It doesn’t just happen that we like a specific color for no reason. Something prompts an affinity, beyond the notion that we look good when wearing it. Colors affect our mood, both positively and negatively. That is because we associate them with strong memories. Spending summers at the beach is one of my fondest childhood memories, so it makes sense that blue is my color.
Primary Colors and What they Represent
All colors originate from just three – Red, Yellow and Blue. One of these colors is likely your favorite, or at the very least, it plays a part in creating your favorite color.
Red represents love, hate anger and passion. It can also be associated with aggression and impulsiveness.
Yellow represents the sun and life, happiness and imagination. I equate this color with Springtime and renewal. I have a friend who must be a yellow because she has the most sunny disposition and positive outlook on life I have ever known.
Blue represents the ocean, water, and renewed energy. That is why I believe it is my color. I draw energy from tranquil scenes like the one below and it brings me peace. There is no place I would rather be than near the ocean. Blue is associated with calm and tranquility and that is exactly how I feel when I see this.
We all have at least a fraction of one of these three colors, or maybe all of them, within our favorite color, so you can probably identify with some of the characteristics associated with primary colors. Now take it to the next level.
What’s Your Favorite Color
If you are ambivalent, or completely unsure of what your favorite color is, take this quiz. Don’t dwell on the questions and answer as quickly as possible. I would love for you to share your outcome in the comments below. Was it correct? My outcome confirmed BLUE.
What Does Your Favorite Color Say About You
According to a 2011 Psychology Today article by Bernado Tirado your favorite color can give some insight into your personality type. He suggests the following, which I do not totally agree with, but find interesting.
Black. People who choose black as their favorite color are often artistic and sensitive. While these people aren’t introverts, they are careful with the details of their lives and do not share easily with others.
White. People who like white are often organized and logical and don’t have a great deal of clutter in their lives.
Red. Those who love red live life to the fullest and are tenacious and determined in their endeavors.
Blue. If blue is your favorite color you love harmony, are reliable, sensitive and always make an effort to think of others. You like to keep things clean and tidy and feel that stability is the most important aspect in life.
Green. Those who love the color green are often affectionate, loyal and frank. Green lovers are also aware of what others think of them and consider their reputation very important.
Yellow. You enjoy learning and sharing your knowledge with others. Finding happiness comes easy to you and others would compare you to sunshine.
Purple. You are artistic and unique. You have a great respect for people but at times can be arrogant.
Brown. You are a good friend and try your hardest to be reliable and dependable. Flashy objects are not something you desire; you just want a stable life.
In terms of this very unscientific study, I am a bit of a mix and while I can relate to several of these personality traits, blue is definitely my color!
Note: As of this post, Malcolm and I are away for a few weeks, making memories and taking lots of pictures. We look forward to sharing our Bermuda, Azores and Portugal adventure with you soon. In the meanwhile, color yourself happy!
The quiz says I’m blue but based on my wardrobe, I’d say it was variations of purple … and black. I RARELY wear blue, but it is a colour I like.
Happy vacationing!

The colours in your photos are brilliant, Suzanne. Without question, my favourite colour is pink. I wonder if pink-lovers share similar personality traits with those who like white and red.

Hi, Suzanne – Me again. I came back to take the Colour Quiz. Amazingly enough, the quiz did successfully predict my favourite colour (pink) but I was less convinced about the description!

Turquoise, brown and purple for me. 😉

I didn’t bother with the quiz, my favorite color is blue, although I’d prefer a red car, and I opted for gray siding on our house. I don’t think I can reconcile the “neat and tidy” thing – pretty much not me. It’s interesting to look at these things.

What an interesting post. Especially the part about what your favorite color says about you. My favorites are two: a steel blue and a blueish teal color, I guess both colors often seen in the ocean. The colors of nature are always what soothe and relax me. But I do love colors and love to wear color rather than just neutrals. We lived for six years in Granada Nicaragua where all the houses are bright different colors.. after that, seeing beige and white and grey houses just no longer made any sense they seem so dull in comparison. Love the last photo and your tones of blue.

I don’t think I have a favorite color. I don’t wear hardly any white, however, the description fits me pretty well. Hmm. Love your photos and hope you are having a great trip.

Blue is my hubby’s favorite color, while mine is green, Suzanne! I loved this post, first, because of your stunning blue images! Wow! Secondly, all the information about the colors and the link to the quiz. I took it and came out…green! Makes sense. I love the beach, but I love the mountains/forest a little more! So glad you joined Sunday Stills and shared your beautiful photos!
